CGA Canada Re-enters Discussions with CPA Canada
CGA Canada today announced its intention to re-enter discussions to join CPA Canada. We are disappointed that the national organization has taken this action given that approximately 50 per cent of Canada’s CGAs are not participating in merger discussions.
As you know, CGA Ontario left merger discussions for reasons that remain unchanged from a year ago. First among those reasons was the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Ontario’s refusal to agree to enforceable commitments regarding member protection.
Without those commitments CGAs put their future as full professionals into the hands of a body that has historically regarded the CA designation as superior. Your board believes a merger without commitments to member protection is too great a risk to take on your behalf. Recent survey results demonstrate that members overwhelmingly support the board’s position.
Your rights and privileges as a CGA are protected through CGA Ontario, which also delivers your member services:
- CGA Ontario is the only body that can confer the CGA designation in Ontario, under the authority of the Certified General Accountants Act, a provincial statute.
- Your national mobility as a CGA is protected under the Agreement on Internal Trade.
- CGA Ontario delivers a broad range of services in support of your career and professional development and we will continue to deliver those services.
- CGA Ontario will continue to promote the designation and advocate for you as we have done so successfully. Labour mobility across Canada and access to public accounting licences are two recent examples of our successful efforts.
- CGA Ontario will continue to provide the CGA program of professional studies to aspiring CGAs.
- Your access to global designations through CGA Ontario’s mutual recognition agreements remains unchanged.
We are exploring domestic and international options in an ever-changing environment and expect to have further information for you this summer. Your board’s commitment to protecting your professional interests remains firm.
