2010-11 Member Fees Now Due

You may not have received your member invoice in the mail – although we mailed it! In light of this delivery issue, the deadline for paying member dues without being charged a late fee has been extended to September 1, 2010.

If you haven't yet paid your member dues for 2010-11, you can do so online by following these steps:

  1. Sign in to www.cga-ontario.org.
  2. Choose Renew Membership in the left-hand navigation menu, under My Account.
  3. Review your member information for accuracy and currency.
  4. Fill out the personal information form and click on “Confirm” at the bottom of the page.
  5. Review your membership category and select “add to cart” to proceed to the checkout, where you will be asked to provide your billing information. (The outstanding balance will now reflect your outstanding membership fee); for your security CGA Ontario does not store credit card information. You must provide your credit card information each time you make a payment.

Please note: the balance due will be $0 until you confirm your member category, at which point the correct amount will be automatically added to the field.

What You Should Know About Bill 168

On June 15, 2010, Bill 168 came into effect. This bill introduced changes to the Ontario Health and Safety Act, changes that increase protection for employees from workplace violence and address workplace harassment.

Here are a few of the key points of Bill 168:

  • Different processes and requirements for both employers and employees than currently provided for under Human Rights Code.
  • Now includes a provision for domestic violence.
  • Identification of domestic violence risk.
  • Identification of employees with a history of violent behaviour.
  • Yearly re-assessment.
  • Reporting of incidents to Ministry of Labour.
  • Includes several new definitions.
  • Harassment prevention policy.

All workplaces must comply with the new legislation. Compliance means that each workplace must develop and post a workplace violence and harassment policy, review it annually, develop a program fro reporting incidents and then train staff on the policy and process.

For more information on Bill 168, please visit the Preventing Workplace Violence And Workplace Harassment page of the Ontario Ministry of Labour's website.

How Do You Promote Your Designation?

We know how hard you worked to obtain your CGA designation. And as a CGA you are the best advertisement for the CGA brand. So be sure to promote yourself and your designation. Here are some examples of how you can tell others about the value of being a certified general accountant.

  • Include the CGA designation on your business card and business correspondence.
  • If you are on Facebook, include a link on your own page to the CGA Facebook page.
  • Make sure your organization is aware you are a certified general accountant.
  • Encourage promising individuals in your organization to consider the CGA program of professional studies.
  • Network. Share your expertise.
  • Volunteer in your local community, whether by serving on a local board, participating in CGA Ontario's annual tax preparation services, or in many other beneficial ways to you and your Association (sign in to the CGA Ontario website and go to the Volunteer Information section for more ways to volunteer).

Doing any one of these is a great way to maximize the recognition of your designation and the value you bring as a CGA.
