CGA Ontario Authorized to Issue Public Accounting Licences

In case you haven’t heard – and it's definitely worth repeating – CGA Ontario now has the authority to issue public accounting licences to those certified general accountants who qualify. Please view the media release for further details.

To learn what you need to do to qualify for a public accounting licence please sign in to www.cga-ontario.org and go to the Public Accounting section (listed in the left-hand navigation). There you'll see a link for the Public Accounting Licences page where you can get all the information you need.

This is a tremendous accomplishment for CGAs and CGA Ontario. Access to public accounting licences for CGAs enhances the stature of the designation for all who hold it. CGAs are now legally entitled to fully practise in whatever segment of the profession that they choose.

CGAs across Ontario have worked hard and waited a long time to take our rightful place in the field of public accounting. Congratulations to each and every CGA.

Which Region Is My Chapter In?

As mentioned in the last issue, when searching for events in 'Net Value or on CGA Ontario's website, you will find that chapters have been broken down into six different regions. If you're wondering which region your chapter falls in here's a handy overview for you:

Region Chapters
Capital Kingston, Ottawa
Central Belleville, Durham, Huronia
Golden Horseshoe Hamilton, Kitchener/Waterloo, Niagara
GTA Peel, Toronto
Northern North Bay, Sault Ste Marie, Sudbury, Thunder Bay
Southwestern Chatham, London, Sarnia, Windsor

As well, chapters are listed at the top of each regional page in 'Net Value.

Attending PD Events in Other Chapters

One of the questions that the Association gets from time to time is whether CGAs can attend events that are being held by chapters other than their own. The answer is yes.

CGAs are not constrained by having to attend events held only in their chapter. If you see a seminar or event at a chapter other than yours that interests you then go ahead and register for it.

With listings for events in all regions being included in 'Net Value, we encourage you to browse other regions to see if there are any being held that you wish to attend.

CGA Ontario Launches Webinar Series for New Undergrads

Students Can Now Prep Online for Fall Accounting Courses

CGA Ontario has launched a new, interactive webinar series for high school graduates who will be taking accounting courses at a college or university this fall. The webinars will be hosted on CGA Ontario’s high school engagement website, seeyourway.org, and they are now available to students.

The series comprises three individual webinars: an introduction to accounting, a case study, and a review of the case study with its answers. Students can download the case study and test their skills before viewing the answers in the third webinar.

The webinar initiative is based on an introductory accounting course offered by Liang Chen, CGA, accounting lecturer at the University of Toronto Scarborough, who recognized that incoming undergraduates would benefit from a preparatory accounting class. Liang then recommended the concept to CGA Ontario.

Led by CGA program instructor Claire St. Pierre, CGA, the webinar series is now online and archived for use throughout the year. If you know a young person who might be interested in this preparatory accounting series, please direct them to seeyourway.org.

Volunteer Opportunities for CGAs: Compliance Audit Committees

Due to recent changes in the Municipal Elections Act, the Province of Ontario now requires municipalities establish a municipal compliance audit committee to review compliance audit applications from electors regarding municipal candidates election expenses. As such, there are a number of municipalities looking for CGAs to serve on these committees.

If you are interested in serving on the Elgin Election Joint Compliance Audit Committee in the Town of Aylmer, the Municipality of Bayham, the Municipality of Central Elgin, the Municipality of Dutton/Dunwich, the Municipality of West Elgin, the Township of Malahide, and the Township of Southwold, please see this posting.

Please note, the deadline for submissions for the Elgin Election Joint Compliance Audit Committee is July 16, 2010, at 4:30 p.m.

The City of Windsor is also looking for CGAs to serve on their Municipal Election Compliance Audit Committee. If you wish to learn more about this opportunity, please refer to their posting.

The CGA Ontario/Ivey Strategic Leadership Program, created in partnership with the Richard Ivey School of Business, is a three-day program that begins on August 17, 2010. This program is designed to sharpen the strategic thinking and leadership skills of senior managers facing a rapidly changing and increasingly complex business environment. For further details, go to the CGA Ontario/Ivey Certificate in Strategic Leadership page of CGA Ontario’s website.

The Certificate in Human Resources for CGAs, which was created in partnership with the Human Resources Professionals Association, is a two-day program that begins on August 24, 2010. CGAs employed by small- to medium-sized enterprises and tasked with cross-discipline roles will find this program particularly interesting. Register soon to guarantee your spot in these exciting new programs.

And don't forget to tell any HR professionals you know about the Finance Certificate for HR Professionals seminar. This is a 2-day certificate course designed specifically for human resources professionals by the Certified General Accountants of Ontario.

Tell Prospective Students About the CGA Program of Professional Studies

Have you told an aspiring accountant about the CGA program of professional studies?

This spring, make it your mission to tell one person a week about the CGA program. Start by requesting a CGA program calendar from CGA Ontario to give to a friend or family member, or perhaps someone in your office, church, local community or social circle, who shows the interest and capability to excel as a designated accounting and finance professional.

Even better, why not inform prospective students about the CGA program through Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter or simply by email? You could include a link to cga-ontario.org!
